A Portrait of a Colored Man on a Diving Board was created by artist Jan Keteleer during the summer. The theme of this oil painting, which depicts a man with his arms spread and his face partially hidden, was originally done for an exhibit that Keteleer was involved with at the Saatchi Gallery in London. The title "A Portrait of a Colored Man on a Diving Board" was suggested by the artist's wife. As he had just bought a diving board for his family, he decided to use that title as the basis of his portrait.
The background for the portrait of a Colored Man on a Diving Board is made from a photograph that he took of the clouds while they were relaxing at the beach. He combined several different hues of blue and green into the background to create the desired effect of aqua and darkness for the picture. This gave him the freedom to experiment with different color mixes and hues, which resulted in this very distinctive oil painting.
