Confidently she looks at you. This girl, neatly dressed in a blue dress with a matching blue hat, clearly comes from a good family and you would think she would look away humbly. Nothing could be further from the truth. Looking straight into your eyes, she is holding a cigarette which is present as a raised middle finger. She looks defiant, will you say something about it?

I made this simple portrait to emphasize the equality of men and women. It is still an everyday truth that it is assumed that women are subordinate to men. What a nonsense it is!
So here is a girl raising a smoking cigarette as a phallic symbol to the world.


Jan Keteleer is known for the ethereal light that his paintings often contain. In the beginning of his career he painted mostly purely abstract landscapes. Later in his career he began to incorporate more human figures.
