This was Chrysler's official explanation of the name Plymouth:
As a product of Chrysler's technique and craftsmanship, Plymouth was so named because of the durability and strength, the roughness and the limitlessness that typified the first American settlers.
Those settlers had founded the Plymouth Colony after they came to America from England with the Mayflower. Walter Chrysler wanted a popular name that people would recognize immediately. One of the executives, Joe Frazer, had suggested the name Plymouth. The first emblem of the brand also showed the Mayflower.
