Hispano Suiza was a Spanish-French manufacturer of cars, airplanes and aircraft engines. The brand was revived in 2019.
Emilio de la Cuadra set up a factory for electric cars in Barcelona, which he sold under the name La Cuadra. In Paris he met the talented Swiss designer Marc Birkigt, whom he hired to work for his company in Spain. Around 1902 the factory changed hands and its name was changed to Fábrica Hispano-Suiza de Automóviles (Spanish-Swiss car factory), but the company went bankrupt in December 1903.
In 1904 it was restarted under the name Fábrica La Hispano-Suiza de Automóviles, under the same management. Four new cars were introduced that year[source?]. In 1911 part of the production was transferred to France. The company continued to build cars until 1938. In 1946 the automotive department of Hispano-Suiza was sold to Enasa, which used the factory to manufacture Pegaso sports cars.
In 2000 the name Hispano-Suiza was revived by the Mazel group for cars and since then four prototypes have appeared, the HS21GTS, the K8, the HS21 and the Granturismo V10 Supercharged. The cars never came into production and the Mazel group is in financial difficulties.
