Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (Russian: Горьковский автомобильный завод; [Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod]; "Gorki Automobile Factory") or GAZ (ГАЗ) is a Russian car factory in Nizhny Novgorod and part of the group GAZ. The plant started in 1929 as NNAZ, a joint venture between Ford and the Soviet Union. The name changed when the city name of Nizhny Novgorod was named after Maksim Gorki. From 1935 to 1956 the addition imeni Molotova was added (literally "named after Molotov").
Nowadays, minibuses, trucks, buses and construction machinery are made by GAZ and since 2012 also passenger cars are made on behalf of Volkswagen AG.
